Maggie's story.

It is with a heavy heart and much sadness that I write this today. Yesterday morning we learned that we have lost a beloved member of our little canine family.

Maggie, from Lexie's first litter, escaped her yard late Saturday afternoon. When they couldn't find her, her owners called us shortly after supper. We went out looking for her but, like them, had no luck. It was very cold Saturday night and we were all worried about her spending the night outside.
Sunday came with still no word of Maggie. The family searched, and so did we. Between us and Maggie's family, we contacted all the local radio stations, the animal shelters and the school to get it announced on Monday morning. While putting up signs in the stores late Sunday evening, we got a tip that she had been spotted on one of the streets in the area earlier in the day. Reg and I scoured that street and the surrounding ones to no avail. Maggie's "aunt" did the same but there was no sign of her. Darkness came and we held out hope that someone had taken her in and, because she wasn't wearing tags, didn't know how to find out who she belonged to.
Monday morning arrived and we thought that maybe we'd hear some positive news now that the shelters were open. However, at 9:30 a.m. I got the phone call we had been dreading. Maggie had been hit by a car and killed on Sunday. We were and are heartbroken. She was apparently close to her home and maybe, just maybe, would have found her way back. Maggie had just had her first birthday on January 29, 2007.
Our heartfelt condolences go out to her family who will surely grieve her loss as much as we do.

If there is anything we can take from this tragedy, it is this. Firstly, please do not leave your dog unattended. Bichons love to run and will do so if given the opportunity. If he can get out of the confines of a yard, he will. They, like small children, are not "street smart" and will not recognize the dangers of running in the street. Secondly, please have some form of identification on your pet. Obviously, they cannot talk and need something to let people know who their family is. Accidents happen but if there is some way we can prevent them, we should take any and all precautions to do so.

Maggie, may you forever be happy and free with the angels. God bless.
